Celebrating the man who wrote "The Hungry Caterpillar"

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

I am a big fan of planning crafts, games and activities that tie in with children's books. I think it's a great way to extend learning for young children, and there are so many great children's books out there that just lend themselves to some wonderful projects!

Saturday 25 June is Eric Carle's birthday - and Kate at "The Amazing Child" is having an online birthday showcasing a week of activities that go with many of his wonderful books! We decided to join in and start with perhaps Mr. Carle's most popular book "The Hungry Caterpillar". Here are some ideas that we have found to go with this classic tale of the caterpillar who just kept eating!

1. Pom Pom Caterpillars
2. How long is the caterpillar?
3. Butterfly Life Cycle bracelets
4. Paper towel butterfly

Do you have any other great activity ideas to go with this book? Please post a comment or if you have a blog, link up your idea here!

This was shared by Sharon on our FB page: "My daycare children love this book, we have reenacted it on the wall in our room, we made the sun with a paper plate some children painted it, we made a leaf put a cotton ball for the egg and from there we downloaded after research on net pictures of all the fruit and food the caterpillar ate through painting them colouring them with wax crayons. We made caterpillars from egg cartons, we named the days of week etc... then we have extended from that with eat more eat less food charts collaging from magazines and catalogues cutting out foods for our charts."

I just love coming up with fun games to go with books. I will have to check out each of your games!
