My path towards the Early Childhood Education field differs from most. I began my professional career working in Information Technology after graduating from Albany State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science in May of 1989. I continued my advanced education by attending the University of Connecticut in the evenings and earned a Masters degree in Business Administration. I progressed in Information Technology for 16 years taking on various roles as a web developer and project manager.
Over the course of those 16 years in Information Technology, I also became deeply involved with my church's children's ministry. For several years, I worked as a preschool Sunday School teacher and Vacation Bible School director. It was here that I felt a connection and a passion to work with young children and a true desire to teach.
In the Fall of 2006, I made the big career switch and became a preschool teacher. For the past 3 years, I have enjoyed teaching classes of 3, 4 and 5 year old children. Our center recently went through the NAEYC accreditation process and it was a huge learning experience. Our center really embraces implementing the NAEYC standards; and we work diligently to ensure that our curriculum and lesson plans effectively execute those standards as well as the CT Benchmark Frameworks.
In the Fall of 2008, I had the privilege to participate in the ConnLEAP course (sponsored by the Hartford Area Child Care Collaborative). It was here that I learned about many of the real issues facing Early Childhood Education professionals, and the need to advocate for and support ECE programs. It was this course that sparked both Tressa and I to fund and develop a website that would provide a valuable service to all ECE professionals who are striving to enhance and maintain their quality early childhood programs.
We are in the very early stages of our project, and are very excited to start this new endeavor. We accept and appreciate feedback, comments and ideas as we work to develop a resource that will be relevant and responsive to your needs as an ECE professional.
